Am Samstag, dem 16. September, spielt die Stuttgart Surge gegen die Vienna Vikings um den Einzug in das Championship Game. Kickoff gegen den amtierenden Champion der European League of Football ist um 14:15 Uhr in der Generali-Arena in Wien.
Während die Surge am vergangen Wochenende das Wild Card Game gegen die Panthers Wroclaw gewann, hatten die Vienna Vikings spielfrei. Denn die Vikings gewannen die Eastern Conference und gingen ungeschlagen durch die Regular Season. Dementsprechend verloren die Vikings zuletzt in Woche 14 der vergangenen Saison ein Spiel in der ELF. Das Championship Game der letzten Saison konnten die Vikings in ihrem ersten Jahr in der ELF direkt mit 27:15 gegen die Hamburg Sea Devils gewinnen. In diesem Jahr wird die Offense der Vikings von US-Quarterback Chris Helbig angeführt, der in der Regular Season für 2372 Yards und 18 Touchdowns warf. Auf der Wide Receiver-Position sind die Vikings mit Jordan Bouah, Weston Carr und Florian Bierbaumer, die alle über 500 Yards erzielten, gut besetzt. Außerdem verfügen die Vikings mit über 2000 Rushing Yards über das beste Laufspiel der ELF. Dabei stechen besonders Florian Wegan (693 Yards, sieben Touchdowns) und Karri Pajarinen (560 Yards, vier Touchdowns) heraus. Auch Quarterback Helbig lief bereits für 252 Yards und neun Touchdowns. Im Schnitt erzielt die Vikings-Offense 33 Punkte pro Spiel.
Auf der anderen Seite lässt die Vikings-Defense durchschnittlich nur 15 Punkte der Gegner zu. Dafür sorgen Spieler wie Cornerback Exavier Edwards mit sechs Interceptions und fünf Pass Breakups oder Defensive End Leon Balogh mit fünf Sacks und sieben Tackles for Loss. Angeführt wird das Team von Head Coach Chris Calaycay, der bereits seit 2007 Head Coach der Vikings ist. Dort arbeitete er von 2011 bis 2013 mit Jordan Neuman, dem Head Coach der Surge, zusammen. Neuman arbeitete während dieser Zeit als Offensive Coordinator unter Calaycay.
Die beiden Head Coaches kennen sich also gut. Es wird spannend sein, ob einer der beiden sich im Spiel dadurch einen Vorteil verschaffen kann. Auf jeden Fall wird es ein hart umkämpftes Spiel um den Einzug ins Championship Game.
