Der vierte US-Import steht fest und es ist ein alter Bekannter. Linebacker Ronley Lakalaka wird auch in der ELF Saison 2022 für die Defense von Stuttgart Surge auf dem Platz stehen.
Ronley zum Re-Signing: „Ich habe mich für Surge entschieden, da meine Trainer und Mitspieler an meine Fähigkeiten glauben, das Team auf ein neues Level zu heben. Außerdem ist die Stadt einfach wunderschön und ich habe bereits jetzt eine starke Kameradschaft seit letztem Jahr aufgebaut, als ich gegen Ende der Saison durch die Verletzung eines anderen Linebackers zum Team kam. Der Trainerstab hat mir damals innerhalb kürzester Zeit das vollste Vertrauen geschenkt, weshalb ich nicht zwei Mal überlegen musste.“
Ronley wuchs auf der schönen US-Insel Hawaii auf und besuchte dort die Punahou High School in Kalihi, wo er zunächst Football, Basketball und Baseball spielte. Sein älterer Bruder und seine Cousins nahmen in schon in jungen Jahren zum Sport mit und er lernte viel von ihnen. In seiner letzten Saison auf Hawaii erreichte er sieben Sacks, zwei Interceptions und führte sein Team zu acht Siegen aus neun Spielen. Der 25-Jährige entschied sich anschließend gegen ein Studium auf seiner Heimatinsel und ging 2015 an die San Diego State University, ein D-I-College, wohin ihm später sein jüngerer Bruder folgte.
In seinem ersten Jahr wurde er noch nicht so regelmäßig eingesetzt, etablierte sich dann aber ab dem zweiten Jahr als Stammspieler und erreichte in der Saison 73 Tackles (zweitbester Wert des Teams), einen Sack, zwei Interceptions und sogar einen Touchdown, der seinem Team zum 45:40 Sieg im Spiel gegen die University of California, Berkeley, verhalf. 2017 übertraf er diese Werte nochmals und sammelte insgesamt 82 Tackles, 5,5 Tackles for Loss und drei Sacks. In seinen vier Jahren am College erreichte er insgesamt 216 Tackles, 14 Tackles for Loss und 5 Sacks und wurde außerdem in seiner letzten Saison zum Most Inspirational Player gewählt.
2019 schaffte er es ins Rookie-Minicamp der New York Jets, konnte sich aber keinen Platz im Team erkämpfen, weshalb er in die Canadian Football League zu den BC Lions ging. Ein Knöchelbruch zwang ihn schließlich zu einer Pause von zwei Jahren, doch er hielt sich stets fit und trainierte weiter. Letztes Jahr kam er dann im August nach Stuttgart und überzeugte sofort.
Zu seinen Zielen sagt er: „Ich will diese Saison den Titel nach Stuttgart holen und mich von Spiel zu Spiel stetig verbessern. Ich wurde für ein Practice Squad der USFL angefragt, will jedoch noch ein Jahr in der ELF spielen, um es dann in ein endgültiges Roster der USFL zu schaffen.“

Ronley about the re-signing: „I signed with the Surge because the coaches and players believe in my ability to take the team to the next level, because of the beautiful city and the already established brotherhood that I have created for when I signed last year toward the end of the season because of a linebacker getting hurt. For the coaching staff to believe in me on short notice, it was a no brainer at that point.“
Ronley grew up on the beautiful island of Hawaii, USA and visited Punahou High School in Kalihi, where he started to play football, basketball and baseball. He accompanied his older brother and his cousins to all activities related to sport and learned a lot from them. In hist last season at the school, he recorded seven sacks and two interceptions and lead his team to a 8-1 record. The now 25-year old decided against staying on Hawaii and went to D-I-college San Diego State University in 2015. His younger brother also joined SDSU a few years later.
During his first season he was used sparingly but established himself as a starter in his second year and racked up 73 tackles (second most of his team), one sack, two interceptions and even a touchdown. The score was vital for the game as his team went on to beat the University of California, Berkeley, 45:40. He surpassed his own stats in 2017 and amassed 82 tackles (team leader), 5.5 tackles for loss and three sacks. During his 4 years at college he made 216 tackles, 14 tackles for loss and 5 sacks and was elected Most Inspirational Player during his senior season.
2019 he made the rookie minicamp of the New York Jets but couldn’t gain a spot on the team’s roster, which is why he made the switch to the CFL to play for the BC Lions. There he broke his ankle and had to pause for two whole years, but kept on training and stayed fit. Last August he moved to Stuttgart and immediately played some exceptional football.
„My goal for this season is to bring a championship to Stuttgart and to get better game after game. Also adding that I was asked to be on practice squad for the USFL, but wanted to spend a year playing in the European League of Football to then sign a contract to be on the team roster within the USFL,“ says Ronley.
