Seit Tag eins ist Maleka Japhet Mbala ein "Stuttgarter Junge" - und er wird es auch weiterhin bleiben: Der deutsche Linebacker hat einen neuen Vertrag für die kommende Saison 2024 unterschrieben und geht damit in seine vierte Spielzeit für die Stuttgart Surge.

Seit 2021 ist Mbala Teil der Stuttgart Surge und der enormen positiven Entwicklung, die die Franchise seitdem genommen hat. In der Gründungssaison der European League of Football 2021 stand Mbala in neun Spielen auf dem Platz und brachte für die Stuttgarter Defense insgesamt 34 Total Tackles, einen Quarterback-Sack sowie 3,5 Tackles for Loss an. In der Folgesaison 2022 konnte der Linebacker verletzungsbedingt nur in fünf Spielen eingesetzt werden und verbuchte dabei 13 Total Tackles und eine Interception. 2023 wurde er in 13 Spielen eingesetzt und erzielte insgesamt 20 Total Tackles, einen Sack und einen Tackle for Loss.
Die Bedeutung von Maleka Japhet Mbala lässt sich aber nicht nur an den Statistiken ablesen, sondern auch an seiner Stellung im Mannschaftsgefüge: Als Mannschaftskapitän gehörte Mbala in den vergangenen Jahren zu den Führungsspielern und motivierte seine Mitspieler auf und neben dem Platz zu besseren Leistungen. Auch in der kommenden Saison 2024 wird Mbala eine bedeutende Rolle im Team einnehmen.
Der gebürtige Ludwigsburger spielte erstmals American Football bei den Stuttgart Scorpions, für die er von 2016 bis 2020 aktiv war. 2017 wurde er bei den Scorpions zum Defensive Player of the Year gewählt.

Mbala has been a part of the Stuttgart Surge since 2021 and the franchise's tremendous growth since then. In the inaugural season of the 2021 European League of Football, Mbala appeared in nine games and recorded 34 total tackles, a quarterback sack and 3.5 tackles for loss for the Stuttgart defense. In the following 2022 season, the linebacker was limited to five games due to injury, recording 13 total tackles and one interception. In 2023, he played in 13 games and recorded 20 total tackles, one sack and one tackle for loss.
Maleka Japhet Mbala's importance is reflected not only in his statistics, but also in his position on the team: As a team captain, Mbala has been one of the team's leaders in recent years, motivating his teammates to improve both on and off the field. Mbala will continue to play an important role for the team in the upcoming 2024 season.
He first played American football for the Stuttgart Scorpions, where he played from 2016 to 2020. In 2017, he was named the Scorpions' Defensive Player of the Year.
