Stuttgart Surge setzt auch 2022 weiterhin auf junge Talente aus der Region. Mit Runningback Janis Hackenberg kommt dabei ein hochveranlagter Spieler aus der U19 der Stuttgart Scorpions zu uns, der vor seiner ersten Saison im Herrenbereich steht.
„Ich habe mich für Stuttgart Surge entschieden, da ich mir wünsche, mich als Teil des Teams athletisch und auf professioneller Ebene entfalten zu können. Ich will das Maximum aus mir herausholen und hoffe, es in der kommenden Saison mit dem Team weit zu bringen und mindestens in die Playoffs einzuziehen. Ich weiß, dass das angesichts unserer Gegner ambitionierte Pläne sind, aber sag niemals nie“, so der ehrgeizige 20-Jährige.
Seine ersten Berührungspunkte mit dem Sport hatte Janis während einer Projektwoche in der sechsten Klasse, jedoch dauerte es noch einige Zeit, bis er Football im Verein spielte, da er ein sehr erfolgreicher Basketballer war und es dort sogar bis in die Jugend-Basketball-Bundesliga schaffte. Mit 16 Jahren entschloss er sich schließlich aus persönlichen Gründen für einen Wechsel zum American Football.
Bei den Neu-Ulm Spartans begann er zunächst als Linebacker, konnte aufgrund der Pandemie aber lediglich drei Partien bestreiten. 2020 wechselte er dann zu den Stuttgart Scorpions, da für die GFL Juniors wieder eine Spielzeit angekündigt war. Die steigenden Inzidenzen führten jedoch auch in dieser Saison zu einem Abbruch. Trotzdem blieb Janis in Stuttgart und startete 2021 richtig durch. Der Student der Medizintechnik eroberte sich einen Stammplatz in der Offense der Scorpions und überzeugte den damaligen Head Coach der U19, George Streeter, so sehr, dass dieser ihn mit zu Surge nahm.
„Mit Janis Hackenberg folgen wir unserem eingeschlagenen Weg, Spieler aus der Region Stuttgart zu finden und zu fördern. Er ist ein großes Talent auf der Position des Runningback und wir freuen uns, dass er nun bei uns ist. Dadurch bekommen wir die Chance, einen weiteren regionalen Spieler weiterzuentwickeln und auf sein höchstes Niveau zu heben“, erklärt ein freudiger Head Coach Martin Hanselmann.
Stuttgart Surge continues to invest in young talents from the South. Highly talented running back Janis Hackenberg comes from the Scorpions youth team to the Surge and is ready to play his first season with a senior team.
„I have decided to play for Stuttgart Surge, because I want to develop myself on an athletic and professional level as a part of this team. I want to extract the maximum out of myself and hope to reach at least the playoffs with the team this season. I know that these are lofty goals given our opponents, but never say never,“ says the ambitious 20-year old.
Janis first came into contact with American football as a sixth-grader through a school project week. However, a few more years went by until he played at club level as he was a very successful basketball player and even played in the highest national youth basketball league. At the age of 16, he finally decided to switch to American football for personal reasons.
He started with the Neu-Ulm Spartans as a linebacker, but could only play three games due to the pandemic. In 2020, he switched teams to the Stuttgart Scorpions, as they were announcing a season for the GFL Juniors, but rising incidence rates again lead to the cancellation of the season. Nevertheless, Janis stayed in Stuttgart and really took off in 2021. The medical engineering student gained a starting spot in the offense played so well that the then head coach of the youth team, George Streeter, decided he should follow him to the Surge.

We’re getting another chance at nurturing a home-grown talent and getting the most out of him,“ says a delighted head coach Martin Hanselmann.
