Endlich war es so weit. Die Stuttgart Surge spielten ihr allererstes Playoff-Spiel. Dabei waren die Panthers Wroclaw zum Wild Card Game zu Gast. Mit einem überzeugenden 37:14-Heimsieg zieht die Surge ins Halbfinale der Playoffs ein. Dort warten die Vienna Vikings.
Zu Beginn des ersten Viertels warf Surge-Quarterback Reilly Hennessey eine Interception. Allerdings konnten die Panthers Wroclaw diesen Ballgewinn nicht nutzen, sondern verschossen ein Field Goal. Die ersten Punkte des Spiels erzielten die Surge durch einen Touchdown-Pass auf Wide Receiver Darrell Stewart zur 7:0-Führung. Im zweiten Viertel erhöhte Stewart mit seinem zweiten Receiving-Touchdown auf 13:0. Bei einem vierten Versuch erzielten die Panthers ihren ersten Touchdown durch einen Lauf von William James zum 13:7. Darauf antwortete die Surge direkt mit einem Kick-Return Touchdown von Yannick Mayr zur 20:7-Führung. Im nächsten Angriff der Panthers fing Safety Goran Zec einen Pass vom Panthers-Quarterback Matthew Vitale ab. Kurz vor der Halbzeit baute die Surge die Führung durch einen Touchdown-Lauf von Nicolas Khandar zur 27:7-Halbzeitführung aus.
Am Anfang des dritten Viertels blockte die Defense der Panthers ein Field Goal der Surge, allerdings konnten die Panthers durch diesen Ballgewinn keine Punkte erzielen. Mit dem nächsten Angriff kam die Surge durch einen langen Pass auf Stewart direkt in die Redzone der Panthers. Von dort schoss der Kicker Lenny Krieg ein Field Goal zum 30:7. Darauf antworteten die Panthers mit einem Touchdown-Pass auf Kacper Fiedziuk zum 30:14. Für die nächsten Punkte der Surge sorgte dann Wide Receiver Louis Geyer durch einen Touchdown-Pass zu Beginn des vierten Viertels. Dadurch baute die Surge die Führung auf 37:14 aus. Bei diesem Spielstand blieb es dann auch.
Mit dem 37:14-Heimsieg zieht die Surge in die nächste Runde der Playoffs ein. Im Halbfinale geht es dann in Wien gegen den Titelverteidiger, die Vienna Vikings. Kickoff ist am Samstag, dem 16. September, um 14:15 Uhr.
Jordan Neuman (Head Coach): „Wir haben heute ein tolles Spiel gezeigt und viel gut gemacht. Allerdings hatten wir heute viele Strafen gegen uns die es uns manchmal schwer gemacht haben. Ab heute Abend beginnt dann die Vorbereitung auf Wien.“
Finally, the time had come. The Stuttgart Surge played their very first playoff game. They hosted the Panthers Wroclaw for the Wild Card Game. With a convincing 37:14 home win, the Surge moves into the semifinals of the playoffs. There the Vienna Vikings are waiting.
At the beginning of the first quarter Surge quarterback Reilly Hennessey threw an interception. However, the Panthers Wroclaw could not take advantage of this ball gain but missed a field goal. The Surge scored the first points of the game on a touchdown pass to wide receiver Darrell Stewart for a 7:0 lead. In the second quarter, Stewart scored his second receiving touchdown to go up 13:0. On a fourth down attempt, the Panthers scored their first touchdown on a run by William James to make it 13:7, and the Surge answered right back with a kick return touchdown by Yannick Mayr for a 20:7 lead. On the Panthers' next drive, safety Goran Zec intercepted a pass from Panthers quarterback Matthew Vitale. Just before halftime, the Surge extended the lead with a Nicolas Khandar touchdown run for a 27:7 halftime lead.
At the beginning of the third quarter, the Panthers' defense blocked a Surge field goal, however, the Panthers were unable to score any points by winning the ball. With the next drive, the Surge got right into the Panthers' redzone with a long pass to Stewart. From there, kicker Lenny Krieg kicked a field goal to make it 30:7. The Panthers responded with a touchdown pass to Kacper Fiedziuk to make it 30:14. Wide receiver Louis Geyer then provided the Surge's next points with a touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter. This extended the Surge's lead to 37:14. The game stayed at this score.
With the 37:14 home win, the Surge moves on to the next round of the playoffs. In the semifinals, the Surge will face the defending champions, the Vienna Vikings, in Vienna. Kickoff is at 2:15 p.m. on Saturday, the 16th of September.
Jordan Neuman (Head Coach): "We showed a good game today and did a lot of good things. However, we had a lot of penalties against us today which made it difficult for us at times. From tonight on, the preparation for Vienna starts."
