Stuttgart native Tom Stickel stays with Surge

Another player from the Stuttgart region will remain with the team in 2022. Linebacker Tom Stickel  will stay with the Surge defense and continue his development.

„I chose to play for Surge again this year because I am a Stuttgart native. I am convinced by the franchisee and the organization because they’re putting a lot of work into the sport and the youth, which I think is extremely important. Other than that, I have a lot of teammates here with whom I’ve been playing together since youth levels which builds up trust and confidence among us. It also creates an atmosphere of accepting the competition and making Surge successful. Personally, I want to help the team reach its goals by simply doing my job and also improving my stats from last year in all areas.“

Tom started playing sports at an early age and was initially involved with handball and soccer before accompanying a friend of his to practice for American football. Before the practice he didn’t know football existed in Germany, afterwards he was instantly hooked and started to play for the youth team of the Ludwigsburg Bulldogs in 2016. As an ambitious person and hard worker, gym visits became a regular thing for him as he always looks to improve himself. Those improvements were recognizable in the team as well as he quickly became position captain and also team captain.

After narrowly missing out on making the youth selection team in 2018 the 6’4" and 238 lbs middle linebacker switched to the U19 team of the Stuttgart Scorpions and was instantly named a starter in his first season there. Plans for the 2020 season were put on halt because of the pandemic, but Tom was able to attract attention through participating in practice with the senior team. This helped him to land on the Stuttgart Surge roster for the 2021 season and after his first year of playing in the European League of Football, he decided to continue his development in Stuttgart and hopes to steadily improve himself and to help the team as best as he can.
