Zum zweiten Spieltag der Saison empfing Stuttgart Surge die Panthers Wroclaw, die letzte Woche mit einem Sieg gegen die Leipzig Kings in die Saison gestartet sind. Bei strahlendem Sonnenschein ging es zum Kickoff und Stuttgart Surge war gewillt, die hohe Niederlage aus der vergangenen Woche wettzumachen. Die Zuschauer im GAZI-Stadion auf der Waldau wurden nicht enttäuscht.
Zunächst wurden jedoch wieder Erinnerungen aus dem Spiel gegen die Dragons geweckt, da die Offense nach drei Versuchen vom Feld musste und der anschließende Punt von den Panthers in die Endzone getragen wurde. Stuttgart konnte jedoch mit einem guten Drive antworten, der zu einem Field Goal durch Jonata Loria führte. Anschließend wurde es noch besser, als Ben Wenzler einen Pass von Panthers-Quarterback Justice Hansen abfangen konnte. Daraus konnte man jedoch leider keine Punkte generieren, denn das Field Goal wurde geblockt. Die Panthers machten es anschließend besser und so ging es beim Stand von 3:9 zum ersten Seitenwechsel.
Im zweiten Quarter konnte sich Receiver Moritz Riedinger zunächst mit einigen tollen Catches auszeichnen und Runningback Janis Hackenberg vollendete den Drive mit dem Touchdown. Der anschließende PAT wurde geblockt, sodass es nun 9:9 stand. Beide Defenses dominierten in der Folge das Spiel und machten den Offenses das Leben schwer, wodurch viele Drives gar nicht erst ins Rollen kamen. Ein weiteres Field Goal von Jonata Loria gab den Surge die erstmalige Führung des Spiels, jedoch konnten die Panthers mit einem sauberen und schnellen Drive antworten, den sie mit einem Touchdown zum Halbzeitstand von 12:15 vollendeten.
Im dritten Viertel taten sich beide Offensivreihen weiter schwer und es passierte kaum Gefährliches. Kurz vor Ende des Viertels fand Quarterback Randy Schroeder den heute auch in der Offense spielenden Benji Barnes mit einem Pass und Surge konnte wieder mit 19:15 in Führung gehen.
Im letzten Spielabschnitt war die Spannung im Stadion greifbar und die Fans taten alles, um Surge von den Rängen aus zu unterstützen. Die Panthers konnten jedoch abermals ihre Comeback–Qualitäten zur Schau stellen und durch zwei Touchdownpässe das Spiel für sich entscheiden. Ein später Touchdown von Wide Receiver Paul Steigerwald war zwar absolut sehenswert, jedoch leider nur noch Ergebniskosmetik. Insgesamt zeigte sich Stuttgart Surge stark verbessert und so blickt man trotz zweier Niederlagen mit Optimismus auf die nächsten Wochen.
Stuttgart Surge welcomed the Panthers Wroclaw for the second matchday of the season. The Polish outfit started with a win against the Leipzig Kings while the Surge was determined to make up for their crushing loss of the first week. The match was played under beautiful sunshine and the spectators were not disappointed.
At first though, memories from the last game against the Dragons were rekindled as the offense had to leave the field after three plays and the following punt was returned into the end zone by the Panthers. Stuttgart was able to answer with a good drive resulting in a field goal by Jonata Loria. Things got even better afterwards as Ben Wenzler intercepted Panthers quarterback Justice Hansen, but no points were generated through that turnover because the attempted field goal was blocked. In contrast, the Panthers made their next field goal and ends were changed for the first time at 3:9.
Surge wide receiver Moritz Riedinger made some spectacular catches in the first half and one of those set up running back Janis Hackenberg for an easy touchdown in the second quarter. The following PAT was blocked and the score remained even at 9:9. In the next minutes, both defenses dominated and made life difficult for the offenses, which stopped a lot of drives pretty early. Another Loria field goal gave Surge their first lead of the game, but the Panthers responded with a quick and clean drive resulting in a touchdown and a score of 12:15 at halftime.
Both offenses continued their struggles in the third quarter and hardly anything dangerous happened at first. As the quarter came to a close the Surge retook the lead at 19:15 when quarterback Randy Schroeder found Benji Barnes, who also played snaps on the offensive side today.
The tension in the stadium was palpable during the fourth quarter and the fans did everything they could to support the Surge from the stands. However, the Panthers once again showed their comeback qualities and were able to win the game thanks to two touchdown passes. A late touchdown catch from Surge receiver Paul Steigerwald was incredible and absolutely worth seeing, but unfortunately didn’t change the outcome of the game. All in all, Stuttgart Surge showed some great improvements and despite two defeats, the team is looking forward to the next weeks with optimism.
