Der Wide Receiver-Kader der Stuttgart Surge nimmt weiter Gestalt an. Nach der Vertragsverlängerung von Louis Geyer kann nun auch die erneute Verpflichtung von Wide Receiver Yannick Mayr bekannt gegeben werden.
Der in Salzburg geborene Österreicher fungierte in der vergangenen Saison an der Seite von Louis Geyer in unzähligen Momenten als der Gamechanger für die Stuttgarter Offensive. Er bestach insbesondere durch seine Schnelligkeit, gepaart mit einer hohen Effizienz: In der Regular Season wurde Mayr 66-mal angespielt und fing davon 50 Bälle (Catch Rate 75,76 %). Im Laufe der Saison knackte er mit 1.012 Receiving Yards die 1000 Yards-Marke. Nicht nur als Wide Receiver, sondern auch als Returner konnte er seine Stärken ausspielen. Mit 547 Returning Yards lag er am Ende der Saison ligaweit auf Platz 10.
Nach dem Vizemeistertitel in der ELF konnte Mayr das Footballjahr 2023 mit einem „richtigen“ Titel abschließen: Mit der österreichischen Nationalmannschaft wurde er Europameister. Gemeinsam mit seinem WR-Kollegen Louis Geyer wurde Mayr darüber hinaus in das ELF All Star-Team 2023 berufen. Sein persönliches Ziel für die kommende Season ist für ihn sonnenklar: „Ich freue mich sehr, mit meinen Brüdern wieder in Stuttgart zu sein. Ich freue mich auf die Spiele mit unseren fantastischen Fans. Mein Ziel ist es, wieder ins Championship Game zu kommen und einen Ring mit der Surge zu gewinnen.“
Der Salzburger begann 2010 bei den Salzburg Ducks mit dem American Football. 2015 gewann er mit der österreichischen Jugendauswahl die Europameisterschaft. Nach sieben Jahren Engagement bei den Salzburg Ducks, bei denen er jedes Jahr als Overall MVP ausgezeichnet wurde, schaffte er 2017 den Sprung zu den Vienna Vikings (AFL), mit denen er im selben Jahr seinen ersten nationalen Titel gewinnen konnte, 2020 folgte der zweite. Sowohl die österreichische Nationalmannschaft als auch die NFL wurden 2019 auf Mayr aufmerksam, sodass er in die Nationalmannschaft einberufen und zum NFL International Combine eingeladen wurde. Im selben Jahr wurde Mayr außerdem zum Team MVP der Vienna Vikings gekürt. Zur ersten Zusammenarbeit mit Head Coach Jordan Neuman kam es 2021, als Mayr von Österreich nach Deutschland zu den Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns wechselte und auf Anhieb die CEFL-Meisterschaft gewinnen konnte. Zwischenzeitlich nahm er am Combine der Canadian Football League teil. Anschließend wechselte er 2022 in die European League of Football zu den Tirol Raiders. Nach seiner ELF-Debütsaison bei den Tirol Raiders ist Mayr seit 2023 fester Bestandteil der Stuttgart Surge.
The Stuttgart Surge's wide receiver roster continues to take shape. Following the extension of Louis Geyer's contract, the Surge can now announce the re-signing of wide receiver Yannick Mayr.
Mayr was born in Salzburg, Austria. Alongside Louis Geyer, Mayr played a key role in the Stuttgart offense last season. His combination of speed and efficiency was a key factor in his success: Mayr was used on 66 occasions in the regular season and made 50 of those catches (75.76 per cent catch rate). Over the course of the season, he broke the 1,000-yard mark with 1,012 receiving yards. He not only played to his strengths as a wide receiver, but also as a returner. He finished the season ranked 10th in the league with 547 return yards.
After finishing runner-up in the ELF, Mayr ended the year with a "real" title: He became European Champion with the Austrian national team. Along with fellow WR Louis Geyer, Mayr was also named to the 2023 ELF All Star Team. His personal goal for the upcoming season is clear: "I am super excited to be back in Stuttgart with my brothers. Looking forward to the games with our fantastic fans. My Goal is to get back to the Championship game and win a ring with the Surge."
Born in Salzburg, Austria, he started playing American football with the Salzburg Ducks in 2010. In 2015, he won the European Championship with the Austrian youth team. After seven years with the Salzburg Ducks, where he was named overall MVP every year, he made the jump to the Vienna Vikings (AFL) in 2017, with whom he won his first national title that year, followed by his second in 2020. Both the Austrian national team and the NFL took notice of Mayr in 2019, as he was called up to the national team and invited to the NFL International Combine. In the same year, Mayr was also named Team MVP of the Vienna Vikings. His first collaboration with head coach Jordan Neuman came in 2021, when Mayr moved from Austria to Germany to join the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns and won the CEFL Championship in his first season. In the meantime, he participated in the Canadian Football League Combine. He then moved to the European League of Football with the Tirol Raiders in 2022. After his ELF debut season with the Tirol Raiders, Mayr has been an integral part of the Stuttgart Surge since 2023.
