Nachdem bereits Wide Receiver Yannick Mayr in der Offensive als erster EU-Spieler für die Saison 2023 der European League of Football bei Stuttgart Surge unter Vertrag genommen wurde, folgt nun mit Safety Goran Zec der erste EU-Spieler für die Defensive.
Statement Goran Zec: „Ich habe mich entschieden für Stuttgart Surge zu spielen, da ich so nah an meiner Familie und meinen Freunden sein kann, die ich vor ein paar Jahren in Deutschland kennengelernt habe. Sie können bei jedem Heimspiel vorbeischauen und mich unterstützen. Ich möchte außerdem wieder mit den Coaches zusammenarbeiten, die ich gut kenne. Ich weiß wie sie arbeiten und was sie leisten können, um Stuttgart wieder auf die Siegerstraße zu bringen. Diese Entwicklung werde ich genießen.”
Goran Zec: Für Zec ist die kommende Saison bereits die dritte in der European League of Football. Bislang stand der Safety bei den Panthers Wroclaw unter Vertrag. In den vergangenen zwei Jahren konnte er so 138 Tackles, 14,5 Tackles for Loss, 3 Sacks und 10 Interceptions (davon zwei Mal ein Pick-six) für sich verbuchen. Bereits als Zwölfjähriger begann Zec mit dem Football, damals Flag-Football für die Indija Indians in seiner Heimat Serbien. 2018 folgte der Wechsel nach Deutschland zu den Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns. Nach zwei Spielzeiten, einem German Bowl und einem GFL-All-Star-Titel, ging es dann zu den Panthers Wroclaw in die European League of Football. Hier wurde der 1,80 m große und 85 kg schwere Safety in beiden Saisons zum All-Star gewählt.
Der 28-Jährige Serbe betritt also in der kommenden Saison nicht zum ersten Mal das Feld unterm Fernsehturm, jedoch ist es in dieser Saison seine Heimspielstätte. Mit ihm und mit Ben Wenzler stehen nun die ersten beiden Spieler aus dem Defensive Backfield für 2023 fest.

Statement Goran Zec: "I chose to play for Surge because I’ll be close to my family and friends I made when I lived in Germany a few years ago. They will be able to come and support me at every home game. I want to work again with well known coaches for me. I know what they will bring and how they will work to put Stuttgart on the map. I will enjoy that process."
Goran Zec: The upcoming season will be Zec's third in the European League of Football where so far, the safety was under contract with the Panthers Wroclaw. In the past two years, he recorded 138 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, 3 sacks and 10 interceptions (including two pick-sixes). Zec started playing football as a twelve-year-old, then playing flag football for the Indija Indians in his native Serbia. In 2018, he made the move to Germany to join the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns. After two seasons, a German Bowl and a GFL All-Star title, he joined the Panthers Wroclaw in the European League of Football. Here, the 5′11″ and 187 lbs safety was voted an All-Star in both seasons.
The 28-year-old Serbian has already played some games at the GAZI-Stadion, but it will be his home ground for the next season. With him and Ben Wenzler, the first two players of the defensive backfield are now set for 2023.
