Es ist Week 2 in der neuen Saison und für die Stuttgart Surge geht es am Samstag, den 01. Juni 2024, ins Nachbarland Polen zu den Wroclaw Panthers. Das Spiel der beiden Kontrahenten, die jeweils ihr Auftaktspiel der Saison 2024 gewinnen konnten, wird um 17:00 Uhr im Stadion Olimpijski in Wroclaw angepfiffen. Sowohl die Surge in der Central Conference als auch die Panthers in der Eastern Conference belegen derzeit den zweiten Tabellenplatz.
Mit Blick auf den Spielverlauf und auf das Endergebnis war das erste Saisonspiel der Stuttgarter gegen die Munich Ravens in der Sinsheimer PreZero Arena recht eindeutig: Mit 27:5 konnte Stuttgart ein deutliches Ausrufezeichen setzen und auf beiden Seiten des Balles zeigen, mit welchem Elan das Team die neue Saison angehen wird.
Anders verlief das Spiel beim kommenden Gegner aus Polen. Als am vergangenen Wochenende die Panthers die Berlin Thunder vor ca. 15.000 Zuschauern in der Tarczynski Arena empfingen, stand es es zur Halbzeit 28:26 für das polnische Team. Nachdem Berlin Thunder im ersten Quarter mit einem Touchdown und PAT die ersten Punkte des Spiels erzielen konnte, legten im zweiten Quarter beide Teams nochmals 19 Punkte (Berlin) und ganze 28 Punkte (Wroclaw) nach, was für die Durchschlagskraft der Offensive aufseiten der Panthers und für die Enge der Partie spricht. Im dritten Quarter erzielte Wroclaw 7 Punkte und ließ ebenso viele zu. Ihre Überlegenheit in der Offense stellten die Panthers im vierten Quarter nochmals zur Schau, als sie mit 2 Touchdowns inklusive PATs den Sieg davontrugen und das Spiel mit einem Endstand von 49:39 beendeten.
Herausragende Leistungen lieferte dabei Panthers QB Steven Duncan. Der US-Amerikaner, der bei den Tarleton Texans in der NCAA Div. 1 (FCS) spielte, komplettierte 19 von 28 Passversuchen und kam dabei auf 230 Yards und 4 Touchdowns. Einen weiteren fünften Touchdown erzielte er per Rush. Auffällig war auch, wie die Offense der Panthers die Bälle verteilen konnte: Vier verschiedene Spieler konnten gegen die Thunder einen Touchdown fangen (Botella Moreno, Adams, Mazan und Bender), was für die Vielseitigkeit und Flexibilität der Offensive spricht.
Aber nicht nur die Offense trug zum Sieg der Wroclaw Panthers bei, sondern auch die Defensive. Um den Abstand zwischen erzielten und erhaltenen Punkten zu wahren, spielte insbesondere LB A.J. Wentland eine zentrale Rolle: Mit 19 Total Tackles und 4,5 Tackles for Loss für 19 Yards. Auf den zweimaligen First Team-Allstar der ELF muss die Offense der Stuttgart Surge achtgeben.
Es wird also bereits in Week 2 ein spannendes Aufeinandertreffen zwischen den beiden Teams, die sich beide als Winning Teams etablieren wollen und mit einem 2-0 Streak in Week 3 gehen möchten.
It's Week 2 of the new season and the Stuttgart Surge travel to neighboring Poland to play against the Wroclaw Panthers on Saturday, June 1, 2024. The game between the two teams, who each won their opening game of the 2024 season, kicks off at 17:00 at the Olimpijski Stadium in Wroclaw. Both the Surge of the Central Conference and the Panthers of the Eastern Conference are currently tied for second place in the standings.
Stuttgart's first game of the season against the Munich Ravens in the PreZero Arena in Sinsheim was a clear-cut affair, with a 27-5 victory for Stuttgart and a strong showing on both sides of the ball.
The game against their next opponents from Poland was a different story. When the Panthers hosted the Berlin Thunder in front of 15,000 fans at the Tarczynski Arena last weekend, the score at halftime was 28-26 in favor of the Polish team. After Berlin Thunder scored the first points of the game with a touchdown and PAT in the first quarter, both teams added another 19 points (Berlin) and a full 28 points (Wroclaw) in the second quarter, which speaks for the power of the Panthers' offense and the closeness of the game. Wroclaw scored 7 points in the third quarter and conceded as many. In the fourth quarter, the Panthers once again showed their superiority in offense as they won the game with 2 touchdowns including PATs and ended the game with a final score of 49-39.
Panthers QB Steven Duncan turned in an outstanding performance. The US-American, who played for the Tarleton Texans of the NCAA Div. 1 (FCS), completed 19 of 28 pass attempts and ran for 230 yards and 4 touchdowns. He also scored a fifth touchdown on a rush. The way the Panthers' offense spread the ball around was also impressive: Four different players were able to catch a touchdown against the Thunder (Botella Moreno, Adams, Mazan and Bender), which speaks to the versatility and flexibility of the offense.
Not only the offense, but also the defense of the Wroclaw Panthers contributed to the victory. In particular, LB A.J. Wentland played a key role in maintaining the gap between points scored and points received with 19 total tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss for 19 yards. The Stuttgart Surge offense will have to watch out for the two-time ELF First Team All-Star.
It will be an exciting Week 2 matchup between two teams that are both looking to establish themselves as winning teams and go 2-0 heading into Week 3.
