Ein weiterer Leistungsträger bleibt der Surge erhalten! Der US-Amerikaner Mitchell Fettig wird auch in der kommenden Saison als Safety und Cornerback für die Stuttgarter Defense zur Verfügung stehen.
In der vergangenen Saison 2023 war der 27-jährige US-Importspieler eine der tragenden Säulen der Stuttgarter Defense, die insgesamt 21 Interceptions fangen konnte. Fettig selbst war für 4 Interceptions verantwortlich, womit er zu den Top 4 Interception Leaders der Liga zählte, und kam in den 15 Spielen, die er absolvierte, auf insgesamt 70 Tackles, 1,5 Sacks, 5,5 Tackles for Loss sowie ganze 9 Pass Breakups. Am Ende der Saison wurde er für seinen außergewöhnlichen Einsatz mit der Nominierung für das Second All Star-Team der European League of Football 2023 belohnt.
Mit diesen Leistungen knüpfte der 1,85 cm große und 88 kg schwere Fettig an seine Leistungen aus der Saison 2022 an, als er mit den Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns in der German Football League den German Bowl gewann und mit seinen Teamkollegen eine der stärksten Defenses der Liga bildete. Mitchell Fettig ist ein absoluter Teamplayer und wird auch in der Saison 2024 alles daransetzen, mit seinem Team das Defensive Backfield sauber zu halten und gemeinsam den nächsten Schritt zu gehen:

An der Olympia High School in seiner gleichnamigen Heimatstadt Olympia, Washington, spielte Fettig von 2011 bis 2014 für die Olympia Bears. Während dieser Zeit wurde Fettig bereits in mehrere All Star-Teams berufen und von der Fachpresse als eines der Top-100-Talente (Prospects) im Bundesstaat Washington gehandelt.
Anschließend wechselte er an die Eastern Washington University und spielte dort bis 2018 sehr erfolgreich für die Eagles (NCAA Div. I): 2015 wurde er dort als Freshman of the Year ausgezeichnet und sowohl 2015, 2016 als auch 2017 in das Big Sky Conference All-Academic-Team berufen. Von den Head Coaches der Big Sky Conference wurde er 2016 bei den All-Big Sky Honors mit einer "Honorable Mention" geehrt. In den Jahren 2017 und 2018 wurde er zweimal in Folge in das All-Big Sky 3rd Team berufen und konnte sich 2017 den Titel des Eagles Defensive MVP ergattern. In seinem Redshirt Senior-Jahr 2018 führte Fettig die Eagles als Teamkapitän aufs Feld. In insgesamt 44 Spielen für die Eastern Washington Eagles verzeichnete Mitchell Fettig in Summe 282 Tackles und 6 Interceptions.
Nach seiner College-Karriere war ein Engagement bei den Calgary Stampeders in der Canadian Football League vorgesehen, konnte aber aufgrund der weltweiten Corona-Pandemie nicht realisiert werden. Sein Weg führte ihn daraufhin zu den Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns und von dort nach Stuttgart, wo er in der kommenden Saison wieder für Furore sorgen will.

In the 2023 season, the 27-year-old US import was one of the mainstays of the Stuttgart defense that recorded a total of 21 interceptions. Fettig himself was responsible for 4 interceptions, making him one of the top 4 interception leaders in the league, and made a total of 70 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 5.5 tackles for loss and 9 pass break-ups in the 15 games he played. At the end of the season, he was rewarded for his outstanding efforts with a nomination to the European League of Football 2023 Second All Star Team.
With these performances, the 1.85 cm tall and 88 kg Fettig built on his successes from the 2022 season, when he won the German Bowl with the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns in the German Football League and formed one of the strongest defenses in the league with his teammates. Mitchell Fettig is a true team player and will do everything in his power to keep the defensive backfield clean and take the next step together with his team in the 2024 season:

At Olympia High School in his hometown of Olympia, Washington, Fettig played for the Olympia Bears from 2011-2014. During that time, Fettig was named to several all-star teams and was considered one of the top 100 prospects in the state of Washington by the press. He then transferred to Eastern Washington University where he played for the Eagles (NCAA Div. I) until 2018. He was named Freshman of the Year in 2015 and was named to the Big Sky Conference All-Academic Team in 2015, 2016 and 2017. The Big Sky Conference head coaches selected him for a Honorable Mention at All-Big Sky honors in 2016. He was named to the All-Big Sky 3rd Team twice in a row in 2017 and 2018, and earned the title of Eagles Defensive MVP in 2017. In his redshirt senior year in 2018, Fettig led the Eagles on the field as a team captain. In a total of 44 games for the Eastern Washington Eagles, Mitchell Fettig recorded 282 total tackles and 6 interceptions.
After his college career, he was supposed to play for the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League. However, due to the global coronavirus pandemic, he was unable to do so. He went on to play for the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns, and from there he moved to Stuttgart, where he hopes to impress once again this coming season.
