Nach der schmerzhaften 34:0-Niederlage gegen die Panthers Wroclaw, gibt Martin Hanselmann sein Amt als Headcoach der Stuttgart Surge auf und tritt zurück. Die Reaktion folgt nicht nur auf den Saisonstart mit sieben Niederlagen in Folge, sondern auch auf die mehr als ein Kalenderjahr andauernde Serie, in der die Stuttgarter Franchise der European League of Football kein Spiel mehr gewinnen konnte. Der letzte Sieg datiert aus der vorigen Saison vom 11. Juli 2021, als man mit 27:24 gegen die Leipzig Kings gewinnen konnte.
Der bisherige Coach der Runningbacks, George Streeter, wird vorerst als Interims-Headcoach die Surge anführen. Der US-Amerikaner spielte 1989 und 1990 für die Chicago Bears und Indianapolis Colts in der NFL. Anschließend war er lange in verschiedensten Funktionen in der Liga aktiv und bringt deshalb viel Erfahrung mit. Vor dieser Saison war er Headcoach der U19 der Stuttgart Scorpions und übernimmt nun also den Posten bei Stuttgart Surge.
Auch die Position des Offensive Coordinators wird interimsweise mit Marvin Washington neu besetzt. Der bisherige Coach der Defensive Backs ist seit über 40 Jahren im deutschen Football als Spieler und Trainer aktiv. Als Headcoach der Weinheim Longhorns führte er das Team von der Oberliga bis ins Viertelfinale der deutschen Meisterschaft und Vergleichbares gelang ihm bei seiner nächsten Station mit den Mannheim Bandits, die er von der Regionalliga bis in die GFL brachte und ebenfalls mit dem Team das Viertelfinale erreichte.
Stuttgart Surge bedauert den Abgang von Martin Hanselmann, bedankt sich für sein Engagement und die geleistete Arbeit und wünscht ihm für die Zukunft alles erdenklich Gute. Das neu formierte Coaching Staff hat dank der Bye Week nun etwa eineinhalb Wochen Zeit, das Team auf das nächste Spiel gegen die Vienna Vikings vorzubereiten.
After the painful 34-0 loss against the Panthers Wroclaw, Martin Hanselmann resigns from his position as head coach of the Stuttgart Surge. This is not only a reaction to the start to the season with seven defeats in a row, but also to the drought lasting more than a calendar year, in which the Stuttgart franchise of the European League of Football hasn't been able to win a game. The last victory dates back to the previous season on July 11th 2021, when the Leipzig Kings were defeated 27-24.
The previous running backs coach, George Streeter, will lead the Surge as interim head coach for the time being. The US-American played for the Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts in the NFL in 1989 and 1990. Afterwards, he stayed active in the league in various positions and therefore brings a lot of experience with him. Before this season, he was the head coach of the Stuttgart Scorpions U19 and now takes over the role at Stuttgart Surge.
The position of offensive coordinator will also be filled on an interim basis by Marvin Washington. The previous defensive backs coach has been active in German football for over 40 years as a player and a coach. He led the Weinheim Longhorns as a head coach from the fourth division to the quarterfinals of the GFL 1 and achieved a similar feat at his next station with the Mannheim Bandits, leading the team from the third division to the GFL 1 and also reaching the quarterfinals.
Stuttgart Surge is sad about the departure of Martin Hanselmann, thanks him for his commitment and work and wishes him all the best for the future. Due to the bye week, the newly formed coaching staff now has about one and a half weeks to prepare the team for the next game against the Vienna Vikings.
