Go Surge!“

So wurde er 2017 zum Defensive Player of the Year gewählt.

Linebacker Maleka Japhet Mbala returns for his third season in Navy Blue

The Stuttgart Surge defense retains a familiar face for the third year of the European League of Football. Linebacker Maleka Japhet Mbala will continue to lace his cleats at the GAZI-Stadion in 2023. After only playing three games in 2022, he wants to attack again in the third season.

Statement Maleka Japhet Mbala: "I know that the last two years have been very tough years for Stuttgart. After speaking with Head Coach Coach Neuman and Defensive Coordinator Coach Brenner, I firmly believe that next year will be a special year for Stuttgart. We owe Stuttgart fans something. This is the time to show who we really are and I want to be a part of it! Of course this is also a personal challenge for me, as I could only participate in 3 games due to an injury but the coaching staff of the Surge will take me to the next level and will prepare me for every battle. Every player! I am 100% convinced of that! Go Surge!"

Maleka Japhet Mbala: He began his American football career with the Stuttgart Scorpions where he lined up as linebacker and delivered right from the start. In 2017, he was named Defensive Player of the Year and made the jump to the GFL-team in 2019. He immediately proved his talent with 21 tackles and one interception. The 5′ 9″ and 198 lbs linebacker has been on the field for Stuttgart Surge since the first minute. Although he was out early last season, he hasn't missed a single practice or game. Mental strength and toughness is very important to him, so he always completed the full routine together with the team, except for the playing time of course. Maleka will now be coached by the newly recruited Daniel McCray and David Zeller next season.
