Zum dritten Saisonspiel 2022 fuhr Stuttgart Surge in die österreichische Landeshauptstadt zu den Vienna Vikings. Die Mannschaft aus Wien ist mit zwei Siegen in die Saison gestartet und ging auch dementsprechend selbstbewusst in die Partie. Der erste Drive wurde konsequent gespielt und konnte von der abermals stark aufgelegten Surge-Defense erst kurz vor der Endzone gestoppt werden. Das Field Goal der Vikings brachte die erste Führung. Nachdem die Surge-Offense bereits nach drei Versuchen vom Feld musste, konnte Linebacker Precious Ogbevoen eine Interception abstauben. Direkt im Anschluss warf jedoch auch Randy Schroeder eine Interception, sodass die Vikings wieder in Ballbesitz waren. Mit einem Touchdown Run konnten sie die Führung auf 10:0 ausbauen.
Das zweite Quarter begann mit einem Zuckerpass von Schroeder auf Wide Receiver Noah Bomba, der bis kurz vor die Endzone lief. Paul Steigerwald und Jonate Loria konnten dann auf 10:7 verkürzen. Es ging super weiter, denn Linebacker Maleka Japhet Mbala fing die nächste Interception. Das Turnover erbrachte im nächsten Drive ein Field Goal und den ausgeglichenen Spielstand von 10:10. Anschließend warf Vikings Quarterback Jackson Erdmann die dritte Interception, die jedoch nicht in Punkte umgemünzt werden konnte. Im Gegenzug hatten die Österreicher einen guten Punt Return und konnten mit dem nächsten Touchdown auf 16:10 erhöhen. Nachdem die Stuttgarter Offense wieder schnell vom Feld war, konnten die Vikings noch kurz vor der Pause durch ein Field Goal auf 19:10 erhöhen.
Im dritten Quarter begann Stuttgart mit einem guten Return ihrerseits und konnte den Drive in drei Punkte verwandeln, als Kicker Jonata Loria ein Field Goal versenkte. Anschließend waren jedoch nur noch die Vikings am Drücker. Strafen brachten die Stuttgarter Offensivbemühungen wieder zum Erliegen und die Vikings erzielten einen Touchdown im dritten Viertel und zwei weitere im vierten Viertel. Die glühende Hitze und die ständigen Besuche der Defense auf dem Feld erschöpften viele Spieler und so stand es am Ende 42:13 für die Gastgeber.
Nun heißt es also im nächsten Spiel gegen die Raiders Tirol endlich das Ruder herumzureißen, und den ersten Saisonsieg zu holen.
Stuttgart Surge visited the Vienna Vikings in the Austrian capital to play the third game of the 2022 season. The team from Vienna started their season with two wins and therefore was pretty confident right from the start. The first drive was played clinically and could only be stopped right in front of the endzone by a once again well playing Surge defense. The resulting Vikings field goald brought the first lead of the game. After the offense couldn't produce a first down Linebacker Precious Ogbevoen picked up an interception, however Surge quarterback Randy Schroeder threw an interception in the next play, resulting in another Vikings posession and thanks to a touchdown run the lead grew to 10:0.
The second quarter startet with a dime from Schroeder to wide receiver Noah Bomba, who was stopped right before the endzone. Paul Steigerwald and Jonata Loria cut the lead down to 10-7. Good things kept on coming for the Surge as Linebacker Maleka Japhet Mbala caught the next interception and the turnover resulted in a field goal and an even score of 10:10. Vikings quarterback Jackson Erdmann then threw his third interception when Ben Wenzler tipped the ball to Malcolm Washington, but no points were gained with the turnover. The Austrians then had a good punt return and regained the lead 16:10 through another run. They could extend the lead to 19:10 thanks to a field goal right before the break.
The third quarter startet with a good return from Stuttgart and another Jonata Loria field goal. After that though, it was all Vikings to the final whistle. Penalties stalled Stuttgart's offensive efforts and Vienna scored a touchdown in the third quarter and two in the fourth. The scorching heat and the defense's constant efforts on the field exhausted a lot of players and resulted in a final score of 42:13 for the hosts.
It's now time to finally turn things around in the next game against the Raiders Tirol and achieve the first win of the 2022 season.
