Stuttgart Surge hat nun auch den Posten des Defensive Coordinators neu besetzt. Johannes Brenner kommt von den Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns an den Fernsehturm und wird zukünftig die Surge-Defense koordinieren. Außerdem schließt sich Cody Pastorino an, der seine aktive Karriere beendet und als Assistant Defensive Coordinator ins Trainergeschäft wechselt.
Im Oktober gewannen sie noch gemeinsam den fünften GFL-Titel mit den Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns, nun wechseln sie zur dritten Saison der European League of Football nach Stuttgart. Johannes Brenner und Cody Pastorino kommen zur Surge und werden zukünftig die Defense der Stuttgarter coachen. Somit kommt, zusammen mit Head Coach Jordan Neuman, ein erfolgreiches und eingespieltes Coaching Staff an den Neckar. Brenner arbeitete seit Beginn der Spielzeit 2017 als Defensive Coordinator an der Seite von Neuman, Pastorino zuletzt als Spieler und Coach im Jugendbereich.
Johannes Brenner: Geboren und aufgewachsen in Schwäbisch Hall, begann Brenner 1998 mit dem American Football in seiner Heimatstadt. Seit 2001 war er Teil der Herrenmannschaft der Unicorns und konnte als Wide Receiver mit dem Team 2011 und 2012 die deutsche Meisterschaft gewinnen. 2010 und 2014 holte er sich als Teil der deutschen Nationalmannschaft außerdem den Europameistertitel. Wie Neuman arbeitete er bereits zu seiner aktiven Zeit als Trainer im Jugendbereich, bevor er 2014 seine aktive Karriere beendete und fortan die Wide Receiver in Schwäbisch Hall betreute. Ein Jahr später ging er in die USA und sammelte 2015 Trainer-Erfahrungen an der University of Wisconsin-Platteville und 2016 an der University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Zur Saison 2017 übernahm er als Defensive Coordinator die Herrenmannschaft und bildete so einen Teil des überaus erfolgreichen Coaching-Duos mit Jordan Neuman. In dieser Funktion konnte er fünf Mal die GFL Süd gewinnen, drei Titel im German Bowl erringen und zusätzlich noch zwei Mal die Central European Football League für sich und die Unicorns entscheiden.

Cody Pastorino: Pastorino wuchs in Willows, Kalifornien auf und besuchte dort die Willows High School. Später ging er an die Willamette University in Oregon und spielte dort von 2009 bis 2013 auf der Safety-Position. Im Anschluss daran wechselte er zunächst in den Trainerstab und war für die Gruppe der Linebacker zuständig, bevor er zur Saison 2014 nach Schwäbisch Hall wechselte, um sich den Unicorns anzuschließen. In seinen ersten drei Jahren scheiterte er stets im Finale der deutschen Meisterschaft und wurde Vizemeister, bevor er 2017, unter der Führung von Neuman und Brenner, endlich den Titel erringen konnte. Im folgenden Jahr wurde die Meisterschaft verteidigt. 2019 und 2021 reichte es wieder nur zum Vizemeister, bevor es dieses Jahr noch ein letztes Mal für ihn zum Titel reichte. Leider konnte der Team-Captain und Publikumsliebling der Haller daran selbst nicht mehr mitwirken, da ein Wadenbeinbruch und eine Verletzung des Brustmuskels seine Pläne durchkreuzten. Seit 2020 betreut er außerdem die U16 der Einhörner als Head Coach und Defensive Coordinator. Pastorino, dessen Vorfahren aus Italien stammen, erhielt im Februar 2016 die italienische Staatsbürgerschaft und wurde 2021 mit der Nationalmannschaft Europameister.

Stuttgart Surge has found its man for the Defensive Coordinator position. Johannes Brenner comes from the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns and will coordinate the Surge defense from now on. He is joined by Cody Pastorino, who is retiring as a player and fully moving into the coaching business as Assistant Defensive Coordinator.
A few weeks ago in October, they won the fifth GFL title for the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns, now they're both coming to Stuttgart for the third season of the European League of Football. Johannes Brenner and Cody Pastorino are joining the Surge and will take care of the defense in Stuttgart. Hence, in combination with new head coach Jordan Neuman, a succesful and well-oiled coaching staff comes to the Neckar river. Brenner worked since the beginning of the 2017 season as defensive coordinator alongside Neuman, Pastorino most recently as a player and coach in the youth academy of the Unicorns.
Johannes Brenner: Born and raised in Schwäbisch Hall, Brenner started playing American football in his hometown in 1998. He was part of the Unicorns first team from 2001 onwards and won the German championship as a wide receiver in 2011 and 2012. In 2010 and 2014, he also won the European championship as part of the German national team. Like Neuman, he also worked as a coach for the club's youth department during his playing days before retiring in 2014 to coach the wide receiver group at Schwäbisch Hall. A year later, he moved to the States and gained valuable coaching experience at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in 2015 and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in 2016. Prior to the 2017 season, he took over as defensive coordinator of the Unicorns, forming one part of the highly successful coaching duo with Jordan Neuman. In that role, he won the GFL South division five times straight, captured three German Bowl titles and also won the Central European Football league twice.

Cody Pastorino: Pastorino grew up in Willows, California, where he attended Willows High School. He later went to Willamette University in Oregon to play as a safety from 2009 to 2013. Following that, he first joined the Willamette coaching staff and was responsible for the linebacker group before moving to Schwäbisch Hall to join the Unicorns for the 2014 season. With the team he was runner-up in the German championship three years in a row before finally winning the title in 2017 under the guidance of Neuman and Brenner. Together they could defend the championship the next year, before falling short again in 2019 and 2021. This year Pastorino and the Unicorns were able to bring the cup home one more time. Unfortunately, the team captain and crowd favorite of Schwäbisch Hall couldn't participate himself, as a fractured fibula and pectoral muscle injury ended his season early. He has also taken care of the Unicorns U16-team as head coach and defensive coordinator since 2020. Pastorino, whose ancestors are from Italy, received Italian citizenship in February 2016 and was European champion with the national team in 2021.
