Letzte Saison musste er noch in der Offensive Line ran, dieses Jahr will er wieder auf seiner eigentlichen Position überzeugen. Jens Walter kehrt als Tight End für eine weitere Saison zurück zu Stuttgart Surge.
Jens zu seinen Beweggründen: „Ich wollte meine Position wieder zurückerobern, mich beweisen und allen bei Surge zeigen, dass ich mehr als nur ein reiner Offensive Liner bin. Ich habe gemerkt, dass ich wieder mehr mit dem Ball zu tun haben will, weil ich auch das Taktische am Football liebe. Mein Ziel für dieses Jahr ist es, auf jeden Fall Touchdowns zu erzielen und mich neben David Meza als weitere Option auf der Position des Tight End zu beweisen.“
Wie bei so vielen anderen Spielern, begann die sportliche Karriere für den gebürtigen Offenburger nicht direkt im American Football, sondern zunächst im Handball und Fußball. Hier spielte er relativ erfolgreich auf der Torwartposition und half bis vor Kurzem auch noch gerne bei seinem Heimatverein aus, will sich in Zukunft aber voll und ganz auf den Football konzentrieren. Mit 16 Jahren kam er dann das erste Mal mit der Sportart in Berührung, als ihn sein Cousin zum Training mitnahm. Jens durfte allerdings erst mit 18 Jahren für die Offenburg Miners auflaufen, für die er dann von 2015 bis 2019 spielte.
Ab 2019 ging der 1,92 m große und 110 kg schwere Tight End dann für die KIT SC Engineers aus Karlsruhe an den Start und hielt sich dort auch während der Pandemie fit. Durch Freunde wurde er 2021 schließlich auf den Combine von Stuttgart Surge aufmerksam, nahm daran teil und konnte sich einen Platz im Team erkämpfen, allerdings nicht als Tight End, sondern in der Offensive Line. In der zweiten Saison will er jedoch wieder auf seiner eigentlichen Stammposition angreifen und allen zeigen, warum er es sich auch verdient hat, dort zu spielen.
Last season he was playing in the offensive line, this year he wants to impress at his actual position. Jens Walter returns to Stuttgart Surge as a tight end for another season.
Jens about his decision to stay: „I wanted to regain a spot at my actual position, prove myself there and show everybody at Surge, that I am more than just an offensive lineman. I realized that I want to be more involved with the ball itself because I love the tactical aspect of football. My goals for this year are scoring touchdowns and proving myself as a valuable option at the tight end position next to David Meza.“
Like many other athletes in Germany, the sporting career of the Offenburg native didn’t start with American football, but rather with handball and soccer, where he successfully played at the goalkeeper position. Until recently he was happy to help out his home club but wants to fully concentrate on American football in the future. He first came into contact with the sport at age 16 when his cousin took him along to practice, but he wasn’t allowed to play for the Offenburg Miners, for whom he played from 2015 to 2019, until he was 18.
In 2019 the 6’4“ and 242 lbs tight end made the switch to the KIT SC Engineers from Karlsruhe, where he kept on training during the pandemic. He was made aware of the Stuttgart Surge combine in 2021 through some good friends, participated and made the roster, however not as a tight end but as an offensive lineman. Now in his second season he wants to play at his actual position and show everybody, why he has earned the right to do so
