Zum ersten Spiel der Saison 2022 waren die Barcelona Dragons zu Gast auf der Waldau. Nachdem es am Morgen und Vormittag kräftig geregnet hatte, kam passend zu Spielbeginn die Sonne zum Vorschein. Das erste Viertel war noch ein vorsichtiges Abtasten beider Mannschaften. Beide Offensivreihen hatten Schwierigkeiten, das Laufspiel zu etablieren und es gab nur wenige First Downs. Nachdem die Dragons langsam in die Nähe der Stuttgarter Endzone kamen, verpuffte auch dieser Drive in einem geblockten Field Goal, weshalb es punktlos zum ersten Seitenwechsel ging.
Im zweiten Viertel nahm das Spiel dann gewaltig Fahrt auf. Nach nicht mal 90 Sekunden kamen die Dragons durch einen Pass von Quarterback Zach Edwards auf Benjamin Plu zu den ersten Punkten, was der Beginn eines furiosen zweiten Quarters der Spanier war. Im Gegensatz dazu schlichen sich bei Stuttgart Surge viele Fehler ein, die die Dragons konsequent und eiskalt nutzten. Zwei weitere Touchdowns, eine Safety und eine Interception, die in die Endzone getragen wurde, ließen den Rückstand der Surge zur Pause auf 0:29 anwachsen.
Nach der Halbzeit verwalteten die Dragons das Ergebnis, was auch dem Wetterumschwung geschuldet war. Einsetzender Starkregen ließ das Spiel wieder verflachen. Eine Safety durch Linebacker Nijaz Hamulic brachte dann die ersten Punkte auf das Stuttgarter Konto. Die Dragons konterten jedoch wieder sofort und konnten den Vorsprung auf den alten Abstand ausbauen, als Wide Receiver Kyle Sweet seinen zweiten Touchdown fing. Ein weiterer fehlerhafter Long Snap der Stuttgarter erwirkte die dritte Safety des Spiels und den Spielstand von 2:38 zu Ende des dritten Viertels.
Im vierten Viertel plätscherte das Spiel mit dem Regen vor sich hin. Die Barcelona Dragons kassierten nach einem Fumble den ersten Touchdown des Tages, als Linebacker Dennis Gratza den Ball aufnehmen konnte und ihn zum 9:38 in die Endzone trug. Dies war auch gleichzeitig der Endstand. Mit gerade einmal 100 erzielten Yards blieb die Offensive einiges schuldig. Die Defense konnte mit 4 Sacks und 11 Tackles for Loss ihr Talent zeigen, musste in der Passverteidigung jedoch einige Touchdowns hinnehmen. Nächste Woche steht das zweite Heimspiel gegen die Wroclaw Panthers an, in dem einiges besser werden muss.
The first game of the 2022 saw Stuttgart Surge host the Barcelona Dragons. After heavy rain in the morning the sky cleared up right as the game started. Both teams began cautiously in the first quarter as each offense struggled to establish a run game and there were few first downs. After the Dragons slowly got closer to the Stuttgart end zone the drive stalled and resulted in a blocked field goal as both teams changed sides scoreless.
The game took off in the second quarter though. It took the Dragons less than 90 seconds to score their first touchdown thanks to a pass from quarterback Zach Edwards to Benjamin Plu, which opened the floodgates for Barcelona. They ruthlessly took the chances the Surge players were offering and scored two more touchdowns, a safety and one pick-six to go ahead by 29 points at the half.
In the second half, the Dragons calmly managed the game which was also due to the change in weather as heavy rain caused the play to slow down. A safety by linebacker Nijaz Hamulic brought the first two points for the Surge. However, the dragons immediately had an answer and wide receiver Kyle Sweet scored his second touchdown of the day. Another errant long snap by the Surge resulted in the third safety of the game ending the third quarter with a score of 2:38.
In the fourth quarter, the game as well as the rain fizzled out. Barcelona conceded their first touchdown of the game when linebacker Dennis Gratza recovered a fumble in the endzone for the Surge to make it 9:38. This was also the final score of the game. Gaining only a 100 yards total, the Surge offense left a lot to be desired. The defense was able to show their talent with four sacks and eleven TFLs, but had to concede three passing touchdowns. Up next are the Wroclaw Panthers and the Surge seeks to improve in a lot of areas.
