Wenn am Sonntag, dem 24. September 2023, die beiden Finalisten der Saison 2023 der European League of Football in der Duisburger Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena aufeinandertreffen, kommt es zum Duell zweier Teams mit unterschiedlichen Ausgangsvoraussetzungen zu Beginn der Saison.
Während Rhein Fire in ihrer Gründungssaison 2022 knapp die Playoffs verpasste, als Zweiter ihrer Conference die Saison beendete und in der jetzigen Saison von Anfang an als Titelaspirant galt, befand sich die Stuttgart Surge nach zwei schwierigen Seasons vor einem kompletten Neubeginn. Schnell stellte sich heraus, dass es dem Coaching-Staff rund um Head Coach Jordan Neuman gelungen ist, ein Winning-Team zu formen. Die Bilanz konnte umgedreht werden, sodass Stuttgart mit zehn Siegen und nur zwei Niederlagen die Central Conference gewonnen und die Erwartungen vieler übertroffen hat. Trotz der zwischenzeitlichen Verletzung von QB Reilly Hennessey konnte die Offense stabil über die Saison hinweg punkten. Aber auch die starke Defense trug entscheidend zur Wende bei.
Nach einem dramatischen Halbfinal-Sieg vergangenen Samstag in Wien, bei dem den Vienna Vikings die erste Saison-Niederlage sowie die erste Heimpleite überhaupt in ihrer ELF-Historie zugefügt wurde, zog die Surge ins Finale ein und machte das für viele Unmögliche wahr. Das Team präsentierte sich ehrgeizig und kämpfte sich auch nach einer kurzen Ein-Punkt-Rücklage im vierten Quarter zurück zum Sieg.
Das Team am Rhein rund um Head Coach Jim Tomsula kann bislang eine „perfect season“ verbuchen: In der Regular Season konnten alle 12 Spiele gewonnen werden, was nicht zuletzt an der starken Offense liegt, die mit 5.482 Total Yards und insgesamt 78 Touchdowns führend in der Liga ist. Die auffällig hohe Prozentzahl an verwandelten Fourth-Down-Versuchen (60%) spricht dafür, wie gefährlich Rhein Fire bis zum Schluss sein kann.
Die besten Spieler der Liga treffen am Sonntag aufeinander: Das Wide Receiver-Korps mit Louis Geyer, Yannick Mayr und Darrell Stewart Jr. konnte gemeinsam in der gesamten Season 24 Touchdowns erzielen. Rhein Fire QB Jadrian Clark führt mit 53 Touchdowns in der Regular Season die Liga an. Während sich die Pass Rusher Alejandro Fernandez Nieto (Rhein Fire) mit 11 Sacks und Sasan Jelvani (Surge) mit 10,5 Sacks die ligaweiten Plätze 2 und 3 teilen, sprechen die Turnover für Stuttgart: Ein entscheidender Faktor für die Surge könnte das Defensive Backfield mit 19 gefangenen Interceptions sein (im Vergleich: Rhein Fire 14).
Am Sonntag kommt es also zu einem Gipfeltreffen mit einer Besetzung, die sicherlich die Wenigsten erwartet hätten. Stuttgart Surge wird die Reise nach Duisburg voller Elan antreten und getreu dem Motto „Respect All, Fear None“ mit dem Ziel das Spiel angehen: From zero to Championship!

While Rhein Fire narrowly missed the playoffs in their inaugural season in 2022, finished second in their conference and were considered title contenders from the start in the current season, the Stuttgart Surge found themselves facing a complete fresh start after two difficult seasons. It quickly became apparent that the coaching staff around Head Coach Jordan Neuman had succeeded in forming a winning team. The record was turned around, so that Stuttgart won the Central Conference with ten wins and only two losses and exceeded the expectations of many. Despite the interim injury to QB Reilly Hennessey, the offense was able to score stably throughout the season. But the strong defense also played a key role in the turnaround.
After a dramatic semi-final win last Saturday in Vienna, in which the Vienna Vikings suffered their first loss of the season and the first home defeat ever in their ELF history, the Surge advanced to the final and made the impossible for many come true. The team presented itself ambitious and fought its way back to victory even after a short one-point deficit in the fourth quarter.
