Am Sonntag, dem 10. September um 14:15 Uhr, steht für die Stuttgart Surge das Wildcard-Game gegen die Panthers Wroclaw an. Dabei handelt es sich um das erste Playoff-Spiel in der noch jungen Geschichte der Surge. Durch den Gewinn der Central Conference sicherte man sich für das Spiel das Heimspielrecht.
Die Gegner, die Wroclaw Panthers aus Polen, spielen wie die Stuttgart Surge seit der Premierensaison 2021 in der European League of Football. Für die Panthers ist dies bereits die zweite Playoff-Teilnahme. In der Saison 2021 scheiterten sie knapp im Halbfinale gegen die Hamburg Sea Devils mit 27:30. Wie die Surge gewannen auch die Panthers ihr letztes Spiel der Regular Season mit 35:6 gegen die Fehervar Enthroners und sicherten sich dadurch den Einzug in die Playoffs. Die polnische Mannschaft beeindruckt vor allem mit ihrem Running-Game. Der Running Back Dawid Brzozowski sammelte in der Regular Season mit 1116 Yards die meisten Rushing Yards der ELF. Außerdem erzielte er zwölf Touchdowns. Angeführt wird die Offense von US-Quarterback Matthew Vitale, der bisher 1773 Yards und 20 Touchdowns erzielte. Seine Lieblingsanspielstation ist der schnelle Wide Receiver Tony Tate mit 895 Yards und 16 Touchdowns.
In der Defense konnten die Panthers während der Saison A.J. Wentland von den Leipzig Kings verpflichten. Bei dem Linebacker handelt es sich um einen der besten Defense-Spieler der Liga. Diese Saison sammelte er 2,5 Sacks und zehn Tackles for Loss. Wentland bildet zusammen mit den Linebackern Solomon Brown (5,5 Sacks und elf Tackles for Loss) und Kamil Ruta (3,5 Sacks und sechs Tackles for Loss) ein gefährliches Linebacker-Trio. Das Team wird angeführt vom US-amerikanischen Head Coach Dave Christensen, der viele Jahre als College-Coach tätig war. Von 2018 bis 2020 war er O-Line Coach der Arizona State Sun Devils. Dort spielte auch Khaylan Kearse-Thomas, der Linebacker der Surge, von 2015 bis 2019.
Für Kearse-Thomas und Christensen kommt es am Sonntag also zu einem Wiedersehen. Dieses will Kearse-Thomas mit der Surge natürlich für sich entscheiden und ins Halbfinale gegen die Vienna Vikings einziehen.
On Sunday, the 10th of September at 2:15 pm, the Stuttgart Surge will play the Wildcard Game against the Panthers Wroclaw. This is the first play-off game in the still young history of the Surge. By winning the Central Conference, they secured the right to play at home.
Their opponents, the Wroclaw Panthers from Poland, have been playing in the European League of Football since the 2021 premiere season, just like the Stuttgart Surge. This is already the second play-off participation for the Panthers. In the 2021 season, they narrowly failed in the semi-finals against the Hamburg Sea Devils with 27:30. Like the Surge, the Panthers also won their last game of the regular season with 35:6 against the Fehervar Enthroners and thus secured their entry into the playoffs. So, it will be a reunion for Kearse-Thomas and Christensen on Sunday. Kearse-Thomas naturally wants to win this one with the Surge and move into the semi-finals against the Vienna Vikings.
