Das Signing-Zeitfenster für die Saison 2024 der European League of Football neigt sich langsam dem Ende zu. Die Stuttgart Surge vermeldet gegen Schluss der Signing-Phase ein weiteres Highlight für die Defense: Der finnische NCAA Div. 1-Spieler, CFL-Spieler und NFL Pathway Program-Teilnehmer Chris Mulumba wird von der Surge unter Vertrag genommen und wird 2024 als Defensive Lineman für die Verteidigung im Einsatz sein.
Der 31-jährige Defensive Tackle Chris Mulumba wurde in Finnland geboren und hat bereits eine erstaunliche sportliche Vita hinter sich: Nachdem er in seiner Jugend die Sportart Judo ausübte und in dieser den schwarzen Gürtel erlangen konnte, begann er den American Football bei den Helsinki Roosters kennenzulernen. Er spielte bei den Roosters von 2009 bis 2012.
Schnell wurden US-amerikanische Football-Scouts auf ihn aufmerksam, sodass er 2014 ans Chabot College im kalifornischen Hayward ging und dort für die Gladiators spielte. In der Saison, die er dort absolvierte, konnte er 35 Total Tackles, 4 Tackles for Loss sowie einen Sack für sich verbuchen. Für die Spielzeiten 2015 bis 2016 transferierte er an das Diablo Valley College und erreichte dort in 10 Spielen in Summe 63 Total Tackles, ganze 9 Tackles for Loss und 4 Sacks. Es verwundert bei diesen Statistiken nicht, dass höherklassige Colleges auf ihn aufmerksam wurden.
Die University of Colorado Boulder, die mit den Buffaloes in der Pac-12 und somit in der NCAA Div. I (FBS) spielt, wurde auf ihn aufmerksam und holte ihn zu sich. Auf höchstem College-Niveau kam Mulumba 2017 bis 2018 in 24 Spielen auf 57 Total Tackles, 3,5 Tackles for Loss und 1,5 Sacks. Aufgrund dieser herausragenden Leistungen wurde der Finne 2017 und 2018 zum Finnish Football Player of the Year 2017 und 2018 ernannt und kam als einer der besten Defensive Ends im College-Football auf die Ted Hendricks Award Watchlist 2018. Darüber hinaus erhielt Mulumba 2018 den Ron Scott Award als Most Improved Defensive Lineman und wurde ins All-Pac-12 Third Team berufen.
Nach seiner Karriere am College blieb der finnische Defensive Tackle mit 1,90 Metern Körpergröße und 127 Kilogramm Gewicht im Fokus der Scouts, sodass er 2020 in das NFL International Player Pathway Program aufgenommen wurde. Er war Teil derselben IPP-Generation wie der deutsche David Bada und die beiden Österreicher Sandro Platzgummer und Bernhard Seikovits.
2021 wurde Mulumba im Global Draft der Canadian Football League von den Hamilton Tiger-Cats gedraftet, für die er von 2021 bis 2023 im Einsatz war.
Mit dieser hochkarätigen Vita und den vielfältigen Football-Erfahrungen auf sehr hohem Niveau stellt Chris Mulumba eine bedeutende Verstärkung für die Defensive der Surge dar.

The Stuttgart Surge announce another defensive highlight as the signing period comes to a close: Finnish NCAA Div. 1 player, CFL player and NFL Pathway Program participant Chris Mulumba has signed with the Surge and will be a defensive lineman for the Surge in 2024.
Born in Finland, 31-year-old defensive tackle Chris Mulumba already has an impressive athletic resume: After practicing judo in his youth and earning a black belt in the sport, he was introduced to American football with the Helsinki Roosters. He played for the Roosters from 2009 to 2012.
He quickly caught the attention of American football scouts, and in 2014 he went to Chabot College in Hayward, California, where he played for the Gladiators. In the season he played there, he recorded 35 total tackles, 4 tackles for loss and a sack. He transferred to Diablo Valley College for the 2015 to 2016 seasons, where he recorded 63 total tackles, 9 tackles for loss and 4 sacks in 10 games. With those stats, it's no surprise that higher-level colleges took notice of him.
The Buffaloes of the University of Colorado Boulder are members of the Pac-12 and play in the NCAA Div. I FBS division. At the highest collegiate level, Mulumba recorded 57 total tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks in 24 games from 2017 to 2018. Due to these outstanding performances, Mulumba was named the Finnish Football Player of the Year in 2017 and 2018, and was named to the 2018 Ted Hendricks Award Watch List as one of the best defensive ends in college football. Additionally, Mulumba received the Ron Scott Award as the Most Improved Defensive Lineman in 2018 and was named to the All-Pac-12 Third Team.
Following his collegiate career, the 1,90 m, 127 kg Finnish defensive tackle continued to draw the attention of scouts and was accepted into the NFL's International Player Pathway Program in 2020. He was part of the same IPP generation as Germany's David Bada and Austria's Sandro Platzgummer and Bernhard Seikovits.
Mulumba was selected in the 2021 Canadian Football League Global Draft by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, with whom he played from 2021 to 2023.
With this elite resume and his diverse high-level football experience, Chris Mulumba is a significant addition to the Surge's defense.
