Angesichts des sehr jungen Kaders wirkt es wie eine halbe Ewigkeit wenn man bedenkt, dass Thomas Ghebrezghiher seit 2004 American Football spielt. 18 Jahre später geht der 32-Jährige O-Liner nun in seine zweite Saison bei Stuttgart Surge.
„Ich freue mich sehr, dass ich ein weiteres Jahr für Stuttgart Surge auflaufen darf. Ich arbeite hart daran, besser zu werden und bin mir sicher, dass es dieses Jahr für uns besser laufen wird. Die Neuzugänge passen sehr gut zum Team und werden uns sicherlich in diesem Vorhaben unterstützen”, sagt Thomas über die kommende Saison.
Bei den Ulm Sparrows begann Thomas 2004 mit American Football und spielte zunächst in der Defensive Line, half jedoch auch schon früh auf der anderen Seite als Center oder Guard aus. 2009 wechselte er dann zu den Kuchen Mammuts und blieb dem Team bis 2013 treu, ehe er bei den Neu-Ulm Spartans eine neue Heimat fand. Hier war er nicht nur bis 2019 im American Football aktiv, sondern wurde 2015 süddeutscher Buspulling-Meister. In dieser ungewöhnlichen Sportart wird im Fünfer-Team ein Bus über eine bestimmte Strecke gegen die Zeit gezogen. 2016 konnte er mit seiner Crew sogar den Titel verteidigen.
Für die Saison 2020 wechselte er zu den Stuttgart Scorpions, konnte jedoch aufgrund der pandemiebedingten Absage der Saison kein einziges Spiel absolvieren. Letztes Jahr tauschte er dann Rot gegen Blau aus und lief zur ersten ELF-Saison für Stuttgart Surge auf. Die ersten neun Spiele absolvierte Thomas als Stammspieler, bevor es am 11. Spieltag zu einer Premiere in seiner Zeit als Footballspieler kam. Nach 17 Jahren Beständigkeit verletzte er sich am Innenband und verpasste tatsächlich sein allererstes Spiel seiner langen Karriere, eine schier unglaubliche Statistik.
Der 1,80 m große und 122 kg schwere Center ist ehrgeizig und verspricht auch für diese Saison wieder vollen Einsatz: „Wir haben sehr starke Gegner und ich werde alles auf dem Feld und abseits des Feldes geben, um meine Ziele und die des Teams zu erreichen. GO SURGE!”
Thomas Ghebrezghiher started playing American Football in 2004, which seems like an eternity ago, especially if you compare it to the young average age of the roster. 18 years later the 32-year old offensive lineman starts his second season with Stuttgart Surge.
"I'm incredibly excited to have the possibility to play for Stuttgart Surge for another season. I'm putting in a lot of work to improve myself and I'm sure this season will be better than last year. The new signings really blend in well with the rest of the team and will surely do their part improving the team", Thomas says about the upcoming season.
He started American football with the Ulm Sparrows in 2004 and played in the defensive line at first, but also helped out in the offensive line as guard or center early on in his career. In 2009 he joined the Kuchen Mammuts and played there until making the switch to the Neu-Ulm Spartans in 2013. There he was not only active as a member of the football team until 2019, but also won the buspulling championship of Southern Germany in 2015. In this highly unusual sport a team of five are pulling a bus over a certain distance against the clock. In 2016 he and his crew could even defend the title.
For the 2020 season he switched teams to the Stuttgart Scorpions but as the season was cancelled due to the pandemic, he couldn't play a single game there. Last year he swapped the red jersey for a blue one and played for Stuttgart Surge in the inaugural ELF season. He started the first 9 games before he injured his knee in week 11, which was a first in his football career. After 17 years of consistently playing he actually missed the first game of his long career, an almost unbelievable fact.
The 5'11" and 269 lbs center is ambitious and again promises to give it his all for the upcoming season: "We have some tough opponents in our division and I promise to give everything I have on and off the field to reach my goals and those of the team. GO SURGE!"
