Endlich ist es soweit: Die European League of Football geht am kommenden Wochenende in ihre fünfte Saison und wird ultimativen American Football auf hohem Niveau bieten! Zum Auftakt der ELF- und auch der Surge-Saison 2025 kommt es zu einem spannenden Duell: Die Stuttgart Surge empfängt zuhause im GAZi-Stadion auf der Waldau die Frankfurt Galaxy. Die Partie wird am Sonntag, dem 18. Mai 2025 um 16:25 Uhr angepfiffen.
Nach zwei Saisons ohne Aufeinandertreffen kommt es direkt zum Showdown. Der Championship-Titelträger von 2021, Frankfurt Galaxy, trifft auf den Vize-Meister von 2023, Stuttgart Surge. Hier stehen sich zwei Mannschaften gegenüber, die nur noch wenig mit den Teams von 2021 und 2022 gemeinsam haben. Hier spricht die Bilanz nämlich eine deutliche Sprache: Alle vier Spiele konnten die Hessen für sich entscheiden. In ihrer Championship-Saison 2021 dominierten die Frankfurter glasklar die Surge: 42:20 und 57:03 endeten damals die Spiele aus Sicht der Galaxy. In der Saison 2022 konnte die Surge zwar an Punkten etwas aufholen, musste sich aber trotzdem mit 20:26 und 13:37 geschlagen geben.
Die Frankfurter Franchise erlitt 2022 einen deutlichen Dämpfer: Als Dritter der damaligen Central Conference verpasste man die Playoffs. Nach Verstärkungen im Team und in der Organisation schaffte die Galaxy 2023 jedoch wieder den Sprung in die Playoffs und konnte die Wild Card-Runde gegen die Berlin Thunder für sich entscheiden. Rhein Fire beendete im Halbfinale dann mit einem Spielstand von 42:23 deutlich die Titelambitionen der Frankfurter. In der vergangenen Saison absolvierte die Galaxy ihre bislang schlechteste Saison mit einem Record von 4-8. Als Konsequenz stellte sich die Franchise im sportlichen Bereich neu auf: Head Coach Thomas Kösling übernimmt die Funktion des Sportdirektors und übergibt die Verantwortung für den Trainings- und Spielbetrieb an professionelle Coaches aus den USA. In der kommenden Saison wird Bert Andrus als Hauptübungsleiter die Galaxy trainieren.
Verstärkung aus den USA kann man bei den Hessen auch unter den Spielern ausfindig machen: Defensive Back Channing Stribling wurde neu verpflichtet und folgt seinem Head Coach Bart Andrus nach Frankfurt. Beide arbeiteten bereits in der United States Football League (USFL) bei den Philadelphia Stars zusammen. Dort wurde Stribling auch als All-Star ausgezeichnet. Zuvor war Stribling, der an der University of Michigan für die Michigan Wolverines in der NCAA Div. I FBS College-Football spielte, für mehrere NFL-Teams im Einsatz und absolvierte seit 2017 für die Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts, San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Chargers und die Washington Commanders mehrere Pre-Season- und Practice Squad-Einsätze.
Auch der neue Galaxy-Wide Receiver Terry Wright hat NFL-Erfahrung bei den Pittsburgh Steelers, Miami Dolphins und den Seattle Seahawks gesammelt. Er spielte in den vergangenen Jahren auch in der Canadian Football League (CFL) und in der United Football League (UFL).
Doch auch zuhause gibt es viel Talent in den Frankfurter Reihen: Zusammen mit dem ehemaligen Surge-Kicker Lenny Krieg, der kommende Saison für die Atlanta Falcons in der NFL spielen wird, wurde auch der Punter der Frankfurt Galaxy, Bastian Roppelt, zum NFL IPP-Combine eingeladen.
Die Frankfurt Galaxy hat unter der Regie ihres Starting Quarterbacks, Matthew McKay, in der Saison 2025 viel vor und möchte in Stuttgart einen Schritt in die richtige Richtung machen. Die Stuttgart Surge wird alles dafür tun, um dem entgegenzutreten und um ihrerseits den richtigen Schritt zu gehen – in Richtung Finale zuhause.

Opening game against a former champion: Stuttgart welcomes the Frankfurt Galaxy!
The time has finally come! The European League of Football will enter its fifth season next weekend, offering the ultimate American football experience at the highest level. The ELF and Surge 2025 season will begin with an exciting matchup. The Stuttgart Surge will host the Frankfurt Galaxy at the GAZi-Stadion auf der Waldau. The match will begin at 4:25 p.m. on Sunday, May 18, 2025.
After two seasons without a matchup, it will be a direct showdown. The 2021 championship winners, the Frankfurt Galaxy, will face the 2023 runners-up, the Stuttgart Surge. These two teams bear little resemblance to the 2021 and 2022 teams. The record speaks for itself: The team from Hesse won all four games. In their 2021 championship season, Frankfurt clearly dominated Stuttgart, winning 42:20 and 57:3. In the 2022 season, the Surge were able to close the gap in points scored, but still lost 20:26 and 13:37.
The Frankfurt franchise suffered a significant setback in 2022 when they finished third in the Central Conference and missed the playoffs. However, after bolstering the team and organization, the Galaxy returned to the playoffs in 2023, winning the Wild Card round against the Berlin Thunder. Rhein Fire then put an end to Frankfurt's title ambitions in the semifinals with a score of 42:23. Last season was the Galaxy's worst to date, with a record of 4–8. As a result, the franchise underwent a sports overhaul. Head coach Thomas Kösling is transitioning to the role of sporting director, handing over responsibility for training and match operations to professional coaches from the United States. Bert Andrus will coach the Galaxy in the coming season.
Reinforcements from the United States can also be found among the players in Hesse. Defensive back Channing Stribling was recently signed and is following his head coach, Bart Andrus, to Frankfurt. The two previously worked together with the Philadelphia Stars in the United States Football League (USFL). Stribling was also named an All-Star there. He played for the Michigan Wolverines in NCAA Div. I FBS college football at the University of Michigan and has played for several NFL teams. Since 2017, he has completed several preseason and practice squad assignments for the Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts, San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Chargers, and Washington Commanders.

However, there is plenty of talent in the Frankfurt ranks at home as well. Along with Lenny Krieg, the former Surge kicker who will play for the Atlanta Falcons in the NFL next season, Frankfurt Galaxy punter Bastian Roppelt has been invited to the NFL IPP Combine.
Under the direction of their starting quarterback, Matthew McKay, the Frankfurt Galaxy have big plans for the 2025 season and are looking to take a step in the right direction in Stuttgart. The Stuttgart Surge will do everything they can to counter this and take the right step towards the home finale.
